DEFINITION:
Under the general direction of the Director of Student Housing and Residential Life (Director), the Associate Director for Residential Education is responsible for overseeing the daily leadership and implementation of the educational and operational facets of the Residential Life program, within eight traditional residence halls, two suite style halls, and three apartment complexes housing over 3,500 students. Responsible for providing administrative and management support to the Director in support of the mission of the Office of Student Housing and Residential Life, and serves as a member of the departmental senior management team. The primary areas of responsibility are staff supervision, programs and events, conduct, staff training, leadership development, assessment and Living Learning Programs, with secondary responsibility in operations, administration, billing, assignments, facility management, and customer service. In the absence of the Director the Associate Director for Residential Education is responsible for oversight of the day-to-day operations for Student Housing & Residential Life.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include, but are not limited to, the following:
1.Assists in the overall administration of Student Housing & Residential Life programs and services. Independently supervises, trains, develops and evaluates two Area Coordinators who supervise a total of eight professional Community Directors. This position also supervises, trains, develops, and evaluates the Coordinator for Living Learning Programs and the Coordinator for Leadership Programs, Assessment and Training. This position will also supervise, train, develop and evaluate any additional senior Residential Education positions created through growth and new construction. Responsible for the recruitment and retention of students and professional staff reflective of the diversity of the student body. Develops agendas and regularly conducts meetings with department personnel. Facilitates the effective development of a cooperative and collaborative working relationship among professional and student staff members.
2.In partnership with the Director, serves as main crisis response manager for the Department. Responds to the needs and problems of residents in a conscientious, appropriate, and timely manner. Resolves severe or sensitive student or parental concerns and makes report of resolution to the Director of Student Housing & Residential Life, Dean of Students and Vice President of Student Affairs and/or President. Serves in the Administrator on Call rotation.
3.Prepares and allocates a significant portion of the departmental budget and directs spending within assigned areas. Assists in the development of Student Housing & Residential Life goals and objectives.
4.Responsible for collaborating with Student Affairs staff in regards to planning, publicizing, and implementing campus recruitment programs and other special university-wide events for Student Housing & Residential Life.
5.Communicates and clarifies departmental expectations with reference to resolution of student conduct and employment difficulties. Serves as a resource and a referral for Student Housing & Residential Life staff in advanced conduct issues.
6.Functions as departmental liaison to Judicial Affairs, Student Activities, Career Development, Personal Growth and Counseling Center, C.A.R.E. Team, University Police Department, Human Resources, Academic Departments, Conference and Events and other departments as necessary.
7.Intervenes and assists in the resolution of staff and student concerns and emergencies, which may disrupt the normal routine of the residential community.
8.Facilitates effective ongoing formal evaluation of programmatic efforts to insure that they are meeting the goals of Student Housing & Residential Life and Student Affairs.
9.Responsible for the oversight of assessment activities within Student Housing & Residential Life.
10.Responsible for the overall development and collaborative implementation of student success, academic success and support programs within the campus residential community for our students. Implements programs that are consistent with the University Vision Statement, and the Division of Student Affairs and the Department of Student Housing & Residential Life missions. Collaboratively designs and implements a strategic residential learning plan that includes faculty, staff, and student involvement.
11.Responsible for the integration of university academic support efforts, student success initiatives, student retention efforts, and cultural diversity within the residential environment.
12.Oversees the coordination of processes and strategies for professional and para-professional staff selection. Oversees the design and facilitation of intentional and comprehensive training program for professional and para-professional staff. Provides support for the evaluation of para-professional staff members.
13.Intervenes and assists in the resolution of interpersonal and inter group conflicts, which may disrupt the normal routine of the residential community.
14.Provides Director with timely and appropriate information as it relates to students experiencing problems and/or incidents in the residential community.
15.Responsible for the oversight of the Student Housing & Residential Life disciplinary process.
Other Functions:
1.Assists the Director and the Assistant Director for Operations in the overall administration of Student Housing & Residential Life programs and services.
2.Prepares reports as necessary for Director regarding department activity.
3.Promotes and maintains an atmosphere of excellent internal and external customer service within the Student Housing & Residential Life program.
4.Serves actively on departmental and other University committees/task forces, as assigned.
5.Identifies issues of area or departmental concern and takes initiative to resolve or report them and assist in the identification of potential solutions.
KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:
Working knowledge of the practices, procedures, management and activities of a Student Housing and Residential Life program; general knowledge of the methods and problems of organizational and program management; general knowledge of research/interview techniques and principles of individual and group behavior. Ability to interpret and apply program rules and regulations; ability to initiate and use resourcefulness in planning work assignments and in implementing long-range program improvements; ability to obtain factual and interpretative information through interviews; ability to reason logically; ability to collect, compile, analyze and evaluate data and make written or verbal presentations; ability to advise students individually and in groups on routine matters and complex matters; ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with faculty CSU administrators, student organizations, and others in committee work. Must possess excellent written and oral communication skills. Must have the ability to sensibly manage emergencies and respond diplomatically and effectively to complaints. Ability to analyze complex situations accurately and adopt effective courses of action; ability to determine appropriate courses of action and proper techniques to utilize while engaged with individuals in personal interactions of an argumentative or sensitive nature; ability to interpret and evaluate descriptions and explanations of problems brought forward by individuals or students organizations; analyze and define the problem, draw valid conclusions and project consequences of various alternative courses of action. Ability and skill to supervise the work of multiple direct reports and effectively recommend personnel actions; strong problem solving and conflict resolution skills; train and evaluate the productivity and performance of employees; and analyze situations and take corrective action. Ability to carry out a variety of professionally complex assignments without detailed instructions.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
A Master's Degree in Student Personnel, Student Affairs, or a related field including experience with counseling techniques, interviewing and conflict resolution AND at minimum four years of progressively responsible post-graduate professional student services work experience managing and coordinating a Student Housing and Residential Life program experience OR equivalent combination of education and experience demonstrating that the applicant has acquired and successfully applied the knowledge and abilities shown above

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:
Experience supervising live-in professionals and will have contributed substantially to the development and management of a residential life program. Experience working with a diverse and multicultural population and performing community service.
SALARY AND BENEFITS:
The hiring salary for this position is commensurate with experience. This is an exempt position and as such is not eligible for the overtime provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act. Benefits include medical, dental, vision and life insurance benefits, contributory retirement plan, TSA (403b), 13 paid holidays per year and other benefits. Corporation of CSUMB positions are "at-will" employment.

The check can be for multiple reasons such as signing bonus, supplies, etc. The victim will be instructed to deposit the check and use the money for any of these reasons and then instructed to send the remaining funds to the fraudster. The check will bounce and the victim is left responsible.
